Shmoocon 2010 Aftermath
Shmoocon happened this past weekend. I'd give a full review/write-up of it but I've been insanely pressed for time lately. If you were there and we got a chance to meet for the first time or if you are someone I've known from before and I got to see you again I'd like to say thank you for making it a great conference for me. I'll be posting Jordan's and Drew's pictures to flickr when I have them as I forgot my camera (again). Expect a link to them here when I have them online.

Is This Thing On?
ShmooCon was great this year. The Hack or Halo team pulled off another great year. My writings on the situation are over here. My friends over at White Wolf Security (who provided the hardware for HoH again and provided some of the most entertaining pieces of the game) did a write up also. The VM from the event is online and I'd be glad to answer any questions people have about things.
Now that things have moved on from Shmoocon I've been keeping quiet and just doing a few FreeBSD things here and there. I've got some bigger things I want to work on but just don't have much time or desire right now. I've been spending a fair amount of time bouldering which is actually quite draining on me, but I do enjoy it immensely. I hope to have some exciting news to share here soon, but I'm awaiting some emails first. Stay tuned as I hope to get back into posting things more often.

Ray's Hell-Burger has Potential
A friend recently got a job in NYC for DC Comics and she is in the process of living a split life currently. Her fiancee is still in the DC area while she's starting her new job up in NYC. She wanted to get everyone together next weekend, but I'll be out of town then (looking for an apartment in NC). So she set something up for this weekend instead.
Ray's Hell-Burger is an off-shoot of Ray's the Steaks. If you're ever in the DC area and want a good steak, this is apparently the place to go (I've never been, but my friends swear by it). Ray's Hell-Burger has potential, but it's just not there for me. The burgers are big and made with good quality beef. The toppings are superb - seriously, the cheddar and bacon was worth the trip alone. The only downside is that they treat their burgers like their steaks. You ask for a medium burger and it comes out pretty much rare in the center - it was basically warm raw meat. While I'm all for some pink in my burgers, this was enough to make me eventually abandon the burger and just eat the cheese and bacon. I'm not sure how they could possibly cook a burger that is that thick thoroughly enough without completely destroying it.
However, it was great to see Risa and Pat before they start their new life in NYC. Afterwards Michelle and I wandered into DC proper to see the Muppets exhibit at the Smithsonian. The heat was pretty bad, as was all the people so we bailed early on the rest of our plans and came home to a nap.

Generic Update, Joy!
It's been two and a half weeks (roughly) since I got married. What have I done since then..
- Sync changes in keynav with the Win32 version I have (and clean up the code)
Release keynav for Win32Just sent a beta out to friends tonight. I hope to have something out the door tomorrow night or Friday at the latest.- Add a couple of Win32 specific things to keynav (like a systray confiration mechanism for starters)
Keep my ports up to date and try to be more active in PRs - I've been slacking due to the wedding.Check. I've been taking care of things as I get time and will continue to take on more PRs and more challenging work in that department.- Get started on a libpkg for FreeBSD
UID/GID creation for ports (at least research if it already exists or is in a PR somewhere)Apparently someone beat me to this, though I don't have the PR number handy.- Licensing framework for ports. I know there is work going on with this for SoC so I will check with the people involved there and see if I can be of assistance, or just do it outright and offer to give the code to the people involved.
- Look into distcc and/or ccache integration into ports
- Registration of plists so that it's possible to ask "which port installs file 'foo'?"
One other Win32 project I'm keeping hush about until actual code is produced. :)There is at least a design document and code skeleton in SVN now. Of course, I didn't do any of the work but reviewing things is on my TODO list for this weekend.
Besides those things I've been climbing, spending time with friends, and miscellaneous other things. I suppose that isn't bad, though it does not include the list of things I have to do related to the wedding (get the photos, insurance stuff, get her last name changed, bank account stuff, etc).

I Feel Happy!

The above photograph was taken by our good friend Matt Nuzzaco (AKA: Nuzz). I'll be putting the photographs up on my flickr site once I have them from Nuzz, but for now that's a good teaser.
I'm now officially married. This means I can start to get back to work on the things I've basically put on hold for a while now. Mostly the two weeks or so leading up to the wedding I didn't do much of anything useful outside of wedding things. That is over now and here are some of the things I intend to do as time permits (in no particular order):
- Sync changes in keynav with the Win32 version I have (and clean up the code)
- Release keynav for Win32
- Add a couple of Win32 specific things to keynav (like a systray confiration mechanism for starters)
- Keep my ports up to date and try to be more active in PRs - I've been slacking due to the wedding.
- Get started on a libpkg for FreeBSD
- UDI/GID creation for ports (at least research if it already exists or is in a PR somewhere)
- Licensing framework for ports. I know there is work going on with this for SoC so I will check with the people involved there and see if I can be of assistance, or just do it outright and offer to give the code to the people involved.

- Registration of plists so that it's possible to ask "which port installs file 'foo'?"
- One other Win32 project I'm keeping hush about until actual code is produced. :)
About the first few entires... Jordan was recently given the C# code to a Win32 port of keynav and permission to release it under whatever license he saw fit. He passed the code on to me and I'm intending to release it once I've done some of the things on the list. If you're a fan of keynav and you use Windows I'm sure you'll like this application. If you have no idea what keynav is go read up on it.
Bonus points if you know where the title of this post is from. :)

Mario Kart Wii
I picked up a copy of Mario Kart Wii yesterday. It's fun, and the Wii-wheel is actually decent. It's the first tilt-the-controller that I've played that doesn't suck big time. The little additions they have made to the game (no more snaking, tricks in the air for boosts, etc) are good. The online play is well done too.
If you're reading this and want my friend code just send me a mail and if I know who you are I'll send it to you. I'd love to play more against people I know.

Reworking Directory Layout
All of the old links to various patches I've posted are now probably dead. In the interest of making things easier for me to keep track of I'm reworking my patch collection so I can easily have a queue of things I want to deal with.
The directory structure is now a bit cleaner though.

Obligatory Cat Pictures
I got a new camera tonight. Nothing fancy, but my 6(?) year old Powershot was in need of an upgrade. With my pending trip to Florida tomorrow my fiancee decided a new camera is in order. We went with the Powershot SD1000. I'd like to really get into photography but I'm actively avoiding that because I don't want it to chew up more of my non-existent time and money. Anyways, here's the two mandatory photos of my cats...
